A TEMPEST in the Park!
The Green Room Community Theatre’s Shakespeare In The Park presents the romantic comedy The Tempest opening this weekend at Southside Park in Newton. Produced by Robert Abbey, Inc. and the City of Newton, this magical story will be performed August 28, 29, September 4 and 5, at 8 PM each evening. This production features a cast of over 25 local actors and is directed by Hollie Sherrill.
Formed four years ago to compliment The Green Room’s Shakespeare Theatre Institute and to provide a venue for local actors to perform the works of William Shakespeare, Shakespeare In the Park has given many talented community actors an opportunity to try classical theatre on an outdoor stage. It also gives the community a chance to take advantage of the wonderful amphitheatre in Southside Park by coming together in a unique social theatre atmosphere and enjoying a picnic and play together.
Since these plays aren’t written in common language, it is a good idea to “brush up on your Shakespeare” by reading a synopsis of the story and maybe even by reading some of the play itself. The words of Shakespeare are meant to be heard rather than read so reading them out loud can make more sense than reading silently. Also, if you are bringing children to the play, it may be a good idea to read a story version of The Tempest with them.
As in past years, this Shakespeare In The Park production is free of charge and open to the public! The Tempest tells the story of Prospero, a powerful magician and former ruler of Milan, who causes his enemies to shipwreck on his island. Once they are ashore, Prospero, along with his daughter Miranda, the magical fairy Ariel, and an enslaved creature Calaban create an adventure for the shipwrecked men they won’t soon forget. It is widely believed that The Tempest is the last play that Shakespeare wrote entirely by himself, and it holds a unique place as being one of his only plays that wasn’t based on a well known story or historical figure.
The Green Room Community Theatre invites you to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy this entertaining cultural treasure. The concession stand will be open to sell refreshments.
